Faculty Bio: Marcio Bittencourt

Dr. Marcio Sommer Bittencourt is a cardiologist and associate professor of medicine and radiology at the University of Pittsburgh and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), in Pittsburgh, PA where he is also de director of the Cardiac CT program of the Heart and Vascular Institute. He is currently an associate editor for Circulation: Cardiovascular Imaging and for the Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia, the Brazilian journal of cardiology.

Dr. Bittencourt earned his medical degree at the Federal University of Parana in Curitiba, Brazil. He then went to the University of Sao Paulo at Ribeirao Preto, Brazil for the internal medicine residency and to the Heart Institute (InCor) from the University of Sao Paulo for cardiology fellowship. Dr. Bittencourt trained cardiac CT in Erlangen, Germany. He also has an MPH from Harvard University, a Ph.D. in Cardiology from the University of Sao Paulo and a post-doctoral fellowship in cardiovascular imaging at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Dr. Bittencourt has been involved with SCCT for several years and has been part of the international committee, the Brazilian IRC, annual meeting and winter meeting organizing committees. He is currently involved with the education committee, and he is part of SCCT board of directors. Dr. Bittencourt has also been elected vice president of cardiac CT for the Brazilian Cardiovascular Imaging Department (DIC)
