Arlington, VA (May 6, 2022) — The Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (SCCT) will present David Newby, MD, PhD with the 2022 Stephan Achenbach Pioneer Award in Cardiovascular CT at the SCCT 17th Annual Scientific Meeting (SCCT2022) in Las Vegas on Friday, July 15. Named in honor of SCCT founding member and first president, Stephan Achenbach, MD, MSCCT, this award honors those who have made landmark contributions by demonstrating a commitment to clinical excellence, research and education in the field.

“It is my pleasure to present this award to Dr. Newby, whose leadership and contributions have made a lasting impact on the field of cardiovascular CT,” says SCCT President Eric Williamson, MD, MSCCT. “We recognize his service, and dedication to research and education, which have contributed to improved healthcare on a global scale. It is a privilege to honor him with this well-deserved and prestigious award.”

SCCT is honoring Dr. Newby's influence as a visionary researcher. His leadership of the groundbreaking SCOT-HEART trial and subsequent follow-up studies has been a landmark in the field, leading to better understanding and prevention of coronary artery disease in general and the role of cardiovascular CT in particular.

Dr. Newby has focused interests in experimental medicine and the advanced imaging of cardiovascular disease, including coronary heart disease, aortic stenosis and heart failure. He has written several successful educational books that have received major national awards, including the 2005 British Medical Association Medical Book Award in the Highly Commended category for Coronary Heart Disease: Your Questions Answered. For his research, he and his teams at University of Edinburgh were awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize and the British Medical Journal Imaging Team of the Year.
