Arlington, Va. (May 4, 2022) — The Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (SCCT) will present Michael Blaha, MD, MPH, with the 2022 Arthur S. Agatston Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Award at the SCCT 17th Annual Scientific Meeting in Las Vegas on Friday, July 15. The award recognizes individuals whose pioneering efforts have saved lives from coronary artery disease — the leading cause of death worldwide.

“It is our pleasure to present this award to Dr. Blaha for his extensive contributions to the development of new strategies to optimize the management of cardiovascular disease risk factors, in particular, his contributions to the MESA study and the MESA tool for calculating risk probabilities based on coronary artery calcium scores,” says SCCT President Eric Williamson, MD, MSCCT. “We recognize the leadership, dedication to patient care and commitment to mentoring others that Dr. Blaha has demonstrated throughout his career. We’re honored to recognize him for these achievements.”

Dr. Blaha is currently a preventive cardiologist and researcher in clinical epidemiology with faculty appointments in both cardiology and in epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He also serves as director of clinical research at the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease and is an associate editor for the Journal of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (JCCT). His clinical interests include primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease, with emphasis on early intervention in patients with advanced subclinical atherosclerosis detected with cardiac computed tomography.

The Arthur S. Agatston Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Award is named in honor of the visionary and pioneer in the field of noninvasive cardiac imaging and one of the world’s leading preventive cardiologists.
