Air

Edinburgh Airport is eight miles from the city centre. Travel between the two takes around 25 minutes using the Airlink bus or tram service. It is Scotland’s busiest airport, with flights connecting with destinations all over the UK, Europe, and beyond .

Rail

Edinburgh is very well-connected to the rest of the UK by rail. There are two major stations in the city centre – Edinburgh Waverley and Edinburgh Haymarket. The Royal College of Physicians is a 10-minute walk from Edinburgh Waverley.

Edinburgh is approximately 4.5hours from London by train.

Frequent direct train services run from London and major cities such as York, Newcastle, and Manchester.  Visitors can connect from many other towns and cities – but might need to change trains on their journey.

    • LNER (formerly Virgin Trains East Coast): visitors can depart from London King's Cross and run up the east coast via Peterborough, York and Newcastle to Edinburgh.
    • Avanti West Coast : visitors can travel along the west coast from London Euston via Crewe, Preston and Carlisle – many of the trains terminate in Edinburgh. Overnight sleeper services from London Euston are also available.
    • Lumo  are relatively new and offer visitors budget train travel from major UK hubs to Edinburgh.
    • There are direct services to Edinburgh that begin outside London:
    • Avanti West Coast  runs services from Birmingham to Edinburgh.
    • CrossCountry  services link Cardiff, Paignton, Penzance, Bournemouth and Brighton with Edinburgh via Birmingham.
    • First TransPennine Express  operates direct services to Edinburgh from Manchester Airport via Manchester, Preston, Lancaster, Oxenholme Lake District and Carlisle.

For train times and fares, visit National Rail Enquiries or Traveline Scotland.

Bus or coach

Edinburgh's main bus station is just behind St Andrew Square, in the city centre.

Scottish Citylink connects Edinburgh to five of Scotland's main cities: Aberdeen, Perth, Glasgow, Dundee and Inverness at least once an hour during peak times.

There is also a daily service to Fort William which stops at some of the most popular destinations in the Highlands, including Glencoe and Bridge of Orchy. There’s even a bus to Belfast and Londonderry with a connection through theStena Line ferry.

Megabus and National Express also connect with major cities across the UK, including London.

Car

Edinburgh boasts six bus-based park and rides which are ideal to use when travelling to the city centre. Metered on-street parking is also available across the city.

If visitors would like to hire a car, there are several car rental companies to choose from.
