Sotirios Evangelou, MD, FSCCT is a consultant cardiologist and head of Cardiac CT at the European Interbalkan Medical Center of Thessaloniki, Greece. With a focus on advanced diagnostics and procedural planning, Dr. Evangelou has
established himself as a leader in cardiac CT, specializing in structural heart disease and stress CT perfusion. His daily routine is a blend of patient care, imaging analysis, research and collaboration with interventional cardiology colleagues,
reflecting his commitment to delivering precise, evidence-based care.
Dr. Evangelou said his journey into cardiac CT was driven by the need for accurate, non-invasive answers to complex clinical questions.
“A significant milestone in my career was my training at the Centro Cardiologico of Monzino, in Milan, Italy, under the guidance of Professor Gianluca Pontone,” he said. “They had a wonderful motto: 'Si cura bene dove si fa ricerca,' which means 'The
best care is found where research is conducted.'
“After this experience, I began integrating the physiology aspects that CCT can offer into daily clinical practice - such as Stress CT perfusion - alongside anatomical imaging, becoming the first in my country to implement this technology with a whole-
heart scanner.”
His engagement with the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (SCCT) has been transformative.
Since joining over five years ago, Dr. Evangelou has actively contributed to the Society’s initiatives, starting as a member of the FiRST (Fellow and Resident Leaders of SCCT) committee and continuing as part of the International Task Force within the
Education Committee.
A Fellow of SCCT, Dr. Evangelou has also served the Society as social media and community ambassador, engaging with colleagues online before, during and after the Annual Scientific Meeting.
“The society offers unbiased, cutting-edge knowledge sharing and exceptional networking, which are crucial for delivering the most current, evidence-based care in my own practice. My SCCT membership truly serves as a platform for education and global
collaboration, essential for staying at the forefront of cardiac imaging.”
Having an undeniable passion for education and collaboration, he said he's most proud of his recognition through notable achievements, including winning the Jeopardy competition at SCCT2022 in Las Vegas (pictured with Dr. Jonathon Leipsic) and having
his cardiac CT images featured twice on the cover of the Journal of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (JCCT).
