Engaging Hospital Administration to Adequately Capture Costs of Performing Cardiac CT and Coronary C
Share |

Identify contact in the hospital for correcting codes to capture costs.

Remember that hospital administrators must manage the entire hospital.  In large hospitals there may be several administrators, and in smaller hospitals, only one.  Ask your administrator for the name and position of the most appropriate contact with whom to discuss your concerns about using the correct codes and thoroughly capturing all costs associated with the provision of cardiac computed tomography (cardiac CT) and coronary CT angiography (coronary CTA) services.

Conduct a meeting with your contact at the hospital.

Make an appointment to meet and discuss your concerns regarding inadequate cost capture for cardiac CT and coronary CTA services under the Hospital Outpatient Prospective Payment System (OPPS).   You may express your fears that access to an appropriate study will be limited by the barriers caused by poor OPPS claims data.  Make sure to take the following information with you:

ü SCCT Issue Brief on Reimbursement for Cardiac Computed Tomography and Coronary Computed Tomography Angiography Services under the Hospital Outpatient Prospective Payment System

ü Sample sheet of common cost elements to account for in the provision of cardiac CT and coronary CTA services. (“Are they sure they have accounted for all the necessary resources needed for high quality Cardiac CT/CTA? “ “Are they sure they have applied the correct cost to charge hospital ratio to the service?”)

ü Code descriptions of the four Category I CPT Codes for reporting cardiac CT and coronary CTA services

Ask your contact to explain how the costs of cardiac CT services are captured at your institution.

Review list of data items to be considered in accounting for costs.

Contact SCCT ( if you have questions/concerns.
