Meet Cristina Fuss, MD, PhD, FSCCT
We asked the CTA Academy co-chair to tell us about herself. Here’s what we learned.

Cristina Fuss is professor and section chief of Cardiothoracic Imaging at Oregon Health & Science University. She has a special interest in congenital heart disease, complex valve diseases and pulmonary non-tuberculous mycobacterial infections.

Cristina Fuss, MD, PhD, FSCCTHer path to CCT started with an early interest with “all things aorta:” aortic plaque, aortic anatomy, how to get rid of aortic plaque, the latter on which she focused her early research with radiofrequency ablation. She had the opportunity to work with pioneers in the field of device development, particularly Dr. Julio Palmaz, whom she says enabled her to experience the basics of cardiovascular device research and development.

“I was fascinated by the possibilities of transcatheter applications; the materials, their inherent properties and therefor possible device designs. My love for all things devices led to my early involvement with the complex valve team at OHSU in Portland Oregon, which required the development of a robust cardiac CT program.”

You may have seen her name listed as a speaker or faculty for quite a few SCCT educational sessions, including tomorrow’s Virtual Coronary CTA Academy: Cases For Basic to Intermediate Users. She said she wants to see more women in this role, as well as in the field of cardiac imaging in general.

“My advice: talk to women in cardiac imaging; talk to me! The underrepresentation of women in imaging and specifically cardiac imaging is a disadvantage for the patient, and we have the opportunity to change this!”

"I am a very proud mother of two fabulous and fierce young women. This was at my younger daughter’s graduation earlier this year. The pandemic years were very hard and my older daughter did not have a graduation.  To be able to witness
their ongoing path is my greatest pride and joy."

Why should people attend the CTA Academy on October 1?

“I may be a bit biased but I truly believe that the educational opportunities that are offered by SCCT are just spectacular. The breadth and depth of information is unsurpassed; the faculty is stellar and the society is constantly updating recommendations and guidelines, that help us on a daily basis.

This year Dr. Andrew Choi and myself will be joined by Dr. Mirvat Alasnag, who will be covering the complex valve cases. I couldn’t be more excited to have another woman cardiac imager on the faculty.”

There’s still space available. Register for the CCTA Academy.
