Libby named recipient of the Arthur S. Agatston Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Award

Vienna, VA (July 2, 2018) —

The Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (SCCT) will present Peter Libby, MD, with the 2018 Arthur S. Agatston Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Award at the SCCT 13th Annual Scientific Meeting, July 12 –15 in Dallas, Texas. The award recognizes individuals whose pioneering efforts have saved lives from coronary artery disease — the leading cause of death worldwide.

“It is our pleasure to present this award to Dr. Libby, whose lifelong and notable contributions in preventive cardiology have made a lasting impact on global health,” says SCCT President Todd C. Villines, MD, FSCCT. “For over a quarter of a century, he has produced innovative research that includes shepherding experimental concepts from the lab into practical, useful concepts in the clinic. We’re honored to recognize him for these achievements.”

Libby is a cardiovascular medicine specialist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Mallinckrodt Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. In addition to preventive cardiology, his clinical and research interests have focused on inflammation in atherosclerosis and vascular biology. His current studies have focused on arteriosclerosis by examining the various messengers produced by the body that may cause arterial plaque development, disruption and blockages. He is also directing research on normal and abnormal function of smooth muscle and endothelial cells.

The author of more than 400 peer-reviewed publications, Libby is widely published in medical journals that include Circulation, Journal of Clinical Investigation, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, New England Journal of Medicine, and Nature. He is an editor of the leading textbook of cardiovascular medicine, Braunwald’s Heart Disease, and a contributor to many editions of Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine.

The Arthur S. Agatston Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Award is named in honor of a visionary and pioneer in the field of noninvasive cardiac imaging and one of the world’s leading preventive cardiologists.
